AND ARTIST IN RESIDENCE,
MAHARISHI UNIVERSITY OF MANAGEMENT
FAIRFIELD IOWA USA
LAWRENCE is originally from England where he earned his Bachelors Degree in Painting, Lithography, and Etching in 1965 from Ealing College of Art, London. He graduated in 1982 with a PhD in the Science of Creative Intelligence from Maharishi European Research University, Holland. He received his Masters Degree in Maharishi Vedic Science in 2010 from Maharishi University of Management USA. He has been practicing Transcendental Meditation for over forty years.
Lawrence learned Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s Transcendental Meditation technique in 1966, and became a teacher of the Transcendental Meditation program in 1971. In that same year he was invited to help form and direct the international design team of Maharishi’s worldwide Transcendental Meditation organization.
In the twenty years that followed he traveled to eighteen different countries, designing over 2,000 books, exhibitions, posters, and brochures presenting the knowledge of Maharishi Vedic Science and Technology. The creation of these educational materials allowed Lawrence the immeasurable privilege of a continuous interaction with Maharishi over many yeas in relation to visual expression. His other design work included architectural, interior, fabric and fashion design.
After his return to England in 1990, although Lawrence continued his various design responsibilities for the TM movement, it was during this time that his attention came back to painting.
Modern science and ancient Vedic Science, as correlated in Maharishi Vedic Science, presents a complete science of consciousness. It is this that provided the framework Lawrence needed for the reevaluation of the visual arts attempted in his book Art, Consciousness, and Maharishi Vedic Science.
The book journals the evolving vision of an individual painter – an evolving vision that resulted from applying the total knowledge and experience of consciousness to the fundamentals of his craft.
Lawrence’s aspiration was to bring to fruition the search initiated in the twentieth-century for absolute values within the discipline of painting. His book documents the discoveries that emerged for him from the twin processes of painting and writing. It lays before the reader a dedicated quest for the ultimate foundation of our visual aesthetic reality – Absolute Image: The Structure of Consciousness in Visual Form.
Lawrence at present lives in Maharishi Vedic City, Iowa, USA. As a faculty member of Maharishi University of Management he continues his study of the relationship between the structure of consciousness and the structure of the visual image.
